Welcome to Happybarista
Hello! My name is Tom Bolland, from the UK, and I’m a bit of a coffee lover. I haven’t always liked coffee, like most kids, I couldn’t understand why everyone drank coffee in the morning. It wasn’t until a close mate of mine got a job as a barista, and started telling me everything to do with coffee, how it’s grown, how it’s brewed and how different techniques affect the taste. I used to get a lot of coffees when he was working, and so my taste for coffee grew. I started to become sensitive to the different tastes and flavours, and understand why they tasted the way they did.
Then, we moved to Melbourne, AU, and let me tell you something, the coffee there is outstanding. They have a coffee culture in the city and each cup is made with affection and served with pride. I fell in love with coffee even more! But the journey didn’t stop there. I ended up getting a job in New Zealand working as a barista, where I met a lot of different people, from lots of different countries, and almost every country has their coffee a different way. Italians have Espresso, Spanish have Cafe Bombon, and the Germans have Pharisaer. Fascinating!
My mission on this site is to provide people with the objective information they need to choose the right coffee products for them
I know and understand people’s passion for coffee. It’s an essential part of a morning routine. I can assure you that all the content on this website has been planned and edited by me to ensure only the highest standard of information is published. I do occasionally use freelance writers to help with the workload, but nothing gets published without the go ahead from me.
As much as possible we try to get our hands on the items that are mentioned in this blog to get some real-life experience. When this isn’t possible, we use extensive online feedback from actual customers to formulate our reviews.
I also spend a lot of time in cafes, and ordering coffee from around the world to try from my home. I have friends that have worked in the coffee industry for 10+ years and ask their advice on items and products.
To put it simply, I want this site to be a place people can trust to give real advice, and that is not plastered with brand sponsorship. People should be able to use the information on this blog to make their own decisions about what coffee or coffee products best suit them.
Caring for the planet
At the end of the day, we need to be able to enjoy our coffee in a sustainable way, so that future generations can enjoy their coffee.
Now, it might seem to some that it’s difficult to have an impact on the sustainability of coffee production as a consumer, but there are a few things we can do:
1. The Lifetime of Products
Producing products creates a carbon footprint. An example would be buying yourself a reusable coffee cup, stopping unnecessary waste and production. Therefore, we will help you to choose long lasting products that means you’re not going to be buying a new coffee machine every 6 months. You save money, and help reduce your footprint. Win-win.
2. Sustainably Sourced
As consumers, our choice really matters when choosing a product. The coffee industry is working hard to create a sustainable supply chain from crop to cup. There are many coffee companies out there doing their bit to help reach this goal, and so we give credit to this in our reviews. Supporting sustainable coffee production means we are at least helping the industry reach its goal.
Spraying the ground with chemicals to help coffee production does not help the crop long term. It damages the ground and after a while the soil becomes infertile, not good for sustainability. Not to mention we don’t want to be ingesting this sort of stuff. Choosing organic means we’re supporting companies that don’t use chemicals that are damaging to the planet.
By following these principles we can reduce our carbon footprint and support the sustainability of coffee production, allowing future generations to enjoy their coffee just as much as we do! 🙂
