I know some of you will be in a rush, so we concluded that the best 5 cup coffee maker is the Hario Glass NEXT Syphon.

Coffee should be enjoyed out and about with friends, but also from the comfort of your own home with your family. A home coffee maker is an essential appliance to have in the house, but selecting the size of the coffee maker can be hard if don’t want to compromise on quality. You need to take into account how many people are in your house, and how much coffee you all go through.

But if you don’t have the space for a big, bulky, top of the range coffee machine? Or what if you only drink a couple of cups a day and not the 10 or 12 cups that these machines make? What can you do?

Go for a 5 cup coffee maker of course. These smaller coffee machines are a perfect middle ground. Here we’ll show you why these small coffee machines are great and which ones you should consider.

These are the 5 cup coffee makers we’ll be looking at:

Why Choose a 5 Cup Coffee Maker?

There are many reasons why you could be inspired to buy a 5 cup coffee brewer. They’re small enough to fit in small apartments or in offices, and they provide a high quality of extraction to give you all of that flavour.

If you’re living on your own, or your household doesn’t consume a lot of coffee, then a small coffee maker is ideal. 5 cup coffee machines make just enough coffee for you and your partner, with some left over for another cup. Brewing small batch amounts results in less waste, meaning you can get the most out of every bag of coffee you buy.

These smaller machines take up a lot less room than some of these other 12 cup coffee makers, or the barista style machines. They won’t get in the way when you’re trying to cook a big sunday roast or if you’ve got the family over for a big dinner.

When you’ve got friends or family over, it’s very easy to make coffee for everyone in the click of a few buttons. Yes, you could make your coffee manually, but for the sake of ease and time, it’s much easier to get a machine to do it. This also extends to on a morning, when you’ve not fully woken up yet.

For those of us that don’t have time to be messing around preparing a coffee, it’s a lot easier to let a machine do the work. However, don’t forget about the benefits of putting in a little more time and effort into your coffee. It certainly ends up in your cup.

Things To Look For When Choosing Your Machine

Dimensions

You ought to be looking at the size of the machine to make sure it’s going to fit on your worktop. There’s nothing worse than having to work around a big clunky machine that’s sitting awkwardly in your kitchen.

Not only the size of the base is important, but the height too. If you’re looking to put it underneath a cabinet, then you definitely should be taking this into account, to make sure it fits.

Easily Cleanable

If you want to keep that high quality of coffee coming out of your brewer every morning, then cleaning it is important. You should give it the once over after every use, but that is difficult when you know it’s a pain to do.

Talking from experience, if your coffee maker is easy to clean, you’re going to enjoy better quality coffee.

Listen, I get it, I know you’re saying you’re going to clean it after every use. But wait until you’re having one of those lazy mornings, or maybe need a coffee because someone drank a little too much the night before, you’re not going to clean it if it’s a lot of effort. So, to make sure you’re going to be enjoying high quality coffee everyday, take into consideration how easy it is to clean.

Durability

You don’t want to be forking out for a coffee maker every 6 months, it’d be nice if you got a few years out of it before having to buy another one. Taking note of the quality of the product is pretty important if you’re wanting to save money in the long run.

Not only will it save you money, but getting a well built coffee maker just adds to how much you enjoy using it. If the quality of the build is high, you’re going to feel more satisfied with your purchase, no doubt.

Types of Coffee Makers

Filter Coffee Maker

The Mr. Reliable if you’re wanting the simple and easy to use coffee machine, then this is the machine to go for. It’s probably the most common type of coffee machine out there for these reasons. Generally pretty cheap for what you get and it also can come with some great features, like a wake up setting. Waking up on a morning to find your drip coffee maker has already brewed you a fresh cup of coffee, is a pretty decent way to start your day.

If there’s one thing that would get me out of bed, it’s the smell of coffee wafting through the house created by my own personal robot coffee maker.

Syphon Coffee Maker

If you’re a little unconventional, or a tad bored of the regular ‘press a button’ coffee makers out there, then you need a syphon to brew your coffee.

This process uses an open flame to brew your coffee, not electricity, which I guess is good in case of power cuts. Looking like something out of a science project, it sits in a similar shape to an hourglass. The water will evaporate from the bottom glass up into where the ground coffee sits, then it cools and slowly drips back down through the filter to create a fresh carafe of coffee back at the bottom.

It looks slightly complicated to use, but there are plenty of youtube videos online, and it comes with an instruction manual. With it sitting on your worktop, it’s definitely going to be a conversation starter, and you’ll no doubt enjoy your coffee making routine every time. Not to mention the quality of this coffee is amazing!

Here’s a video to show you how they work:

Manual Espresso

These machines are like the ones you see in cafes, although they’ll be a lot smaller for your home. If you’ve got limited space on your kitchen worktop then these are probably not the best coffee maker to go for.

With that being said, if you do like to have the flexibility to choose what style of coffee drink to have to start your day, then this is ideal. Normally they come with a steam arm so you can froth your milk, enabling you to create lattes, cappuccinos or flat whites.

These machines are my favourite to have in the house, for the simple reason that I love being behind an espresso machine and making my own coffee from bean to cup. If you don’t know how to make your own coffee from scratch, and don’t have much of an interest to learn, then I’d go for something else, but they sure are fun once you get the hang of it!

The Best 5-Cup Coffee Makers – The Reviews

Black+Decker CM0700BZ

5 cup coffee maker
Key Features:

  • Easy to clean
  • Sneak a Cup feature
  • Permanent ground filter
  • Easy to clean
  • 2 year warranty
  • 7.25 x 8.2 x 10.75 inches
  • 1.79 pounds

One of the features I love in a coffee maker to be able to pause the brew and sneak a cup in before the brewing process has finished. This is ideal so you don’t have to wait until the entire carafe has filled up before that first cup.

Like we said earlier, being easy to clean is important. Luckily, this machine comes with a removable filter basket, meaning that after every use you can give it a quick rinse in the sink, super easy. It takes 30 seconds to wash which then ensures top quality coffee every time you brew and you don’t have to be wasting filter paper!

The price is incredibly reasonable for what you get. Some people have reported that the durability hasn’t been great, with things starting to go wrong within the first year or so. However, it does come with a 2 year warranty, so if things do start acting up, you should be covered.

One disadvantage with this machine though, is that it cannot be programmed, so you can’t set it to start brewing your coffee for when the alarm goes off. Not a big deal, but for a little bit more money, it’s an awesome feature to have.

Mr Coffee JWX9-RB

5 cup coffee maker
Key features:

  • Removable filter basket
  • Brew pause feature
  • Thermal double-walled carafe
  • Programmable up to 24 hours in advance
  • 1 year warranty
  • 9.2 x 7.1 x 11.6 inches
  • 1 pound

Unlike the Black+Decker machine, this has the delayed brew settings. You can program it to start brewing when you wake up, for when you get in from work, or for after everyone has finished the evening meal.

The carafe is thermal and made out of stainless steel so you’re coffee won’t get cold if it’s sitting there for an hour or two. Not only that, but there is a warming plate that it sits on.

For those forgetful folks out there, you don’t have to worry if you walk out of the door to go to work, and when you’re halfway there you realise you haven’t turned off your coffee machine. The Mr. Coffee has you covered with a 1 hour automatic shut off function.

There is also a removable filter basket making an easy job for cleaning. The build quality is good, and they’ve paid attention to little details like a see through window for the water level.

Zojirushi EC-DAC50 Zutto

5 cup coffee makerKey features:

  • Beautiful design
  • Very compact
  • Removable water tank
  • Warming plate
  • Charcoal water filter for purifying water
  • 1 year warranty
  • 6 x 9 x 11 inches
  • 5.8 pounds

With a beautiful and simple design this coffee maker would look great on many people’s countertops, but for the price it does lack a couple of the bells and whistles. For example it doesn’t come with an automatic turn off feature and doesn’t beep to let you know it’s finished brewing.

A handy feature is the fact you can remove the water tank to fill it up under the tap. If you’ve had a machine in the past without this, then you know full well how awkward it can be to fill it up. It can often end up with water spilt all over the counter. Well, for me it did. So i’d find this a very convenient fix.

The general quality of the build is good and has a nice finish, but the glass carafe is a little fragile with it being thin glass. It doesn’t take much of a knock to put a little fracture in it, so something to be careful about.

The Zijirushi doesn’t come with a brew strength feature, but it does come with a measuring scoop. After a few uses, you should know how much coffee to put in to adjust the strength of your coffee to suit you.

Capresso 304.01 Steam PRO

5 cup coffee makerKey features:

  • Espresso machine
  • Steam arm for milk
  • Adjustable strength
  • Cheap
  • 9.8 x 7.5 x 13.2 inches
  • 4.98 pounds
  • 1 year warranty

We had to include an espresso machine in this review. There aren’t a lot of compact machines out there that can brew multiple cups of coffee at once, and has a steam wand for when you’re feeling like enjoying a latte.

Slightly larger than the filter coffee machines, but still small enough so it’s not taking up lots of room on your worktop, and for a good price. Sacrificing the extra room is made up for with the flexibility of being able to make many different styles of coffee.

The build quality is okay, not the best. Some people have reported that the machine broke within the first year, but they were covered under the warranty. As a low end espresso machine it does it’s job perfectly and produces top quality coffee.

The glass carafe that comes with it holds 4 cups of coffee, but after you’ve sneaked your first cup you’ll have enough to go around.

Hario Glass NEXT Syphon

5 cup coffee makerKey features:

  • Beautiful design
  • Brings amazing flavours out of your coffee
  • Unconventional and unique
  • Easy to clean
  • Reusable filter
  • 16.34 x 5.15 x 7.28 inches
  • 3 pounds

You may not of ever seen or heard of using a syphon to brew your coffee, but it’s often the case that once you’ve been making coffee this way, you won’t go back.

Now, I’ll start with the only negative I’ve found, which is that they’re a little fragile. If you break the glass the manufacturer does have replacements, but they can become expensive if you’re reckless and break it often. But if you do well not to smash glasses in the house, then you should be fine.

The flavour that this process brings out in the coffee is unparalleled to other methods, and it’s great for any coffee enthusiast or connoisseur. This method brings a bit of excitement and uniqueness to your usual morning routine and you don’t get bored, especially when you realise how great the quality of your coffee is.

It comes with everything you need to clean the bowls and the burner to evaporate the water. If you use the alcohol burner that’s provided, you will most likely end up with a black stain on the bottom of the glass. This is avoided if you swap that out for a butane burner instead.

Lots of people are more than happy with this product in all aspects. It brings a completely new perspective and experience to enjoying coffee.

Conclusion

If you’re wanting an easy and simple way to brew consistently good coffee, then I’d go for the Mr Coffee. It’s a good all rounder, comes with the brew pause feature and you can program it to start pouring you a coffee as soon as your alarm goes off.

However, for sheer quality and flavour, uniqueness and beauty, and an all round great coffee maker, i’d choose the Hario Syphon. No, it doesn’t have any of the cool gadgets, but that also means there are less things that can go wrong. I think if you decide to go with the Hario, you’re not going to be disappointed.
