How To Choose The Best Bunn Coffee Maker For You

Not everyone wants the same things from their Bunn coffee maker, there are a lot of variables which determine what the best machine is for you personally. Here are some things to consider.

Brew Capacity

Knowing how much coffee you’re going to need to brew on a daily basis is something you have to think about. There’s no point getting a single serve coffee maker, if you’re wanting to make 12 cups of coffee each morning for the family. You’ll be spending an arm and a leg every week funding the family’s supply of coffee with K Cups.

Most Bunn coffee makers brew 10 cups, which is around 50 ounces of coffee. This is enough for the majority of people. If you and your partner drink a couple of cups every morning, then this is ideal. Most machines on the market have a 12 cup capacity, with the odd one making a 14 cup model, if you’re wanting more coffee at a single time.

You can find some machines that make less, if this is too much for you. You could consider looking at 5 cup coffee makers instead. If Bunn coffee makers aren’t catching your drift, then we have a whole range of articles on helping you choose the right coffee maker for you.

Cost

Think of your coffee maker as an investment. It’s not something you’re going to want to buy every couple of weeks. They’re not exactly expensive like a car, but I wouldn’t put them in the cheap category. So, think about what you want from your coffee maker, if you want all the fancy gadgets that come with it, or just a plain coffee maker that gets the job done.

There are a few Bunn coffee makers that come with some cool features, like being programmable so you have a brewed carafe ready for when you wake up. But you get what you pay for, and you’ll have to go a little higher end for that. If you have the budget, then it could be worth it for you, but at the end of the day if you want a top quality coffee maker, you’re going to get one with Bunn.

Lifestyle

How do you take your coffee? Do you smash out an entire 12 cup carafe on your own every morning? Or do you take a cup or two with your breakfast before work and that does you fine? These are just questions to ask yourself when looking at if the coffee maker will suit your needs.

For example, if you have a couple of coffees in the morning before work, and then fill up your travel mug to have one on the journey, then you’ll want a coffee maker that’s going to be able to do both.

Range of Drinks

What do you want your Bunn coffee maker to brew? Because if you’re looking for espresso based milky drinks, like cappuccinos or lattes, then you’re better off looking at something else, for example the Keurig K Cafe.

If you’re wanting to have the option of making a carafe, and a single serve coffee, then you can look at machines that specialise in this, like dual coffee makers.

If you want to fill a carafe with drip coffee each morning, and leisurely sip away at it, then a Bunn coffee maker offers exactly that.

Velocity Brew, or Speed Brew?

2 types of Bunn coffee makers, velocity and speed. We’ll quickly run through what each of them do and how they differ.

Velocity Brew

So these guys are the old timers, who have since been replaced with the slightly different and newer, Speed Brew machines. Don’t let this put you off though, they’re still sold on amazon for a reason, they’re good coffee makers!

They all have a 10 cup (50 ounce) brew capacity, and brew within a few minutes, which is quick. They also have an internal water reservoir which heats the water before starting the brew cycle.

The Velocity brew line shows its age, as it doesn’t come with an on/off button. The brew cycle starts once you’ve filled the water reservoir up and closed the lid. There is also no auto-off feature and no auto-pause feature if you want to grab a quick cup before the carafe has finished brewing. You don’t need to do this however, as the carafe is filled up in a few minutes.

So no, they don’t have all the fancy gadgets, but that also means there’s less chance of things breaking, so if you want a standard coffee maker that’s going to brew you super tasty coffee, then Velocity’s are your ones.

Speed Brew

These guys are the new kids on the block. There are 4 different models, Platinum, Classic, Select, and Elite.

They all have a 70 ounce, stainless steel water reservoir with a flip lid for refilling. In my experience, it’s more convenient to have a removable water reservoir so you don’t have to hold your water jug at an awkward angle, but they brew beaut coffee, so we’ll let this slide. Because it’s a fixed reservoir, it can keep the water hot, so when you decide it’s time to brew, the water is already good to go.

You can change how much you want to brew, from a travel mug to a full carafe. The carafe that comes with the coffee maker is specially designed for a drip free pour, so nothing gets wasted. It takes only 2 minutes to brew the smallest brew capacity, at 20 ounces (4 cups) and 4 minutes for a full carafe. There’s no wonder it’s called the Speed Brew.

Best Bunn Coffee Makers – The Reviews

So, there you have it, you’ve got what you need to be considering when buying a Bunn coffee maker, and the different types that Bunn offers. Now, let’s take a look at some of their products. All Bunn coffee makers come with a 3 year warranty.

Bunn CSB1 Select Speed Brew

best bunn coffee maker

Key features:

  • Stainless steel hot water reservoir
  • Brew a travel mug or a full carafe
  • 12.5 x 7.8 x 14 inches
  • 8.5 pounds

One thing we like about this machine is its user friendliness, it’s very easy to use and to set up. Not just the machine, but the Bunn coffee pot makes pouring the coffee easy too. I know it’s not exactly hard to pour coffee, but you know what I mean. It’s advertised as the fastest 10-cup home coffee maker, brewing a 50 ounce carafe in 4 minutes.

The Bunn Select produces a very flavourful and smooth cup of coffee, and the aroma is beautiful on a morning, it doesn’t have that burnt tinge to it that you find with certain coffee makers.

One negative thing is that the warming plate doesn’t shut off automatically, so you have to bring along your A game in awareness, or else you’ll end up with a burnt coffee pot if it’s left on overnight for example. Some people have a concern about fire with the Bunn coffee makers staying on constantly to decrease brewing time. I wouldn’t say this is a valid concern, I think Bunn would have taken this into consideration, but if you’re that worried you can unplug it.

It has what Bunn calls a ‘Burp and Boil’ system. Because the water is always hot, the coffee can be consistently and evenly extracted, unlike other coffee makers, where they expose the ground coffee to the hot water whenever it’s ready. This is why other coffee makers take much longer to brew.

Bunn BT Velocity Brew

best bunn coffee maker

Key features:

  • Stainless steel hot water reservoir
  • Double wall, vacuum insulated thermal carafe
  • 15 x 13 x 7 inches
  • 9.15 pounds

Between the several Velocity machines, the biggest differences are mainly aesthetics. They’re all pretty similar in terms of mechanics. The difference with this machine however, is that it has a specially designed thermostat for use above 5,000ft as water boils at a different temperature here.

The well insulated carafe that comes with the Bunn BT means that your coffee can be kept warm for up to 2 hours after you’ve brewed it. So you can have a cuppa with your breakfast, go and do whatever chores you need to do, and by the time you’ve finished, a hot carafe of coffee will still be sitting there.

Bunn HB Heat and Brew

best bunn coffee maker

Key features:

  • Programmable brew start time
  • Shatter resistant drip free carafe
  • 9.7 x 8.7 x 16.3 inches
  • 8.5 pounds
  • Spray head for optimal coffee extraction and flavour

Alright, this is the Bunn coffee maker for you if you’re after something more than just a coffee maker. First and foremost, it has a programmable start time. Which means that if you’re waking up at 7am, then you can program your machine to start brewing at 6.55. By the time you’ve gotten out of bed and are downstairs, there’s a fresh carafe of coffee sitting there. If there’s one thing to get you out of bed, it’s this.

Secondly, it has an auto plate warmer. When you start the brewing cycle, the warming plate will turn on, keeping your coffee hot for whenever you want a cup. Then, after 2 hours, it will automatically turn off, just in case you forget to do it yourself.

It’s a very stylish looking coffee maker, but it’s quite tall, so if you’re wanting to put it under a top cabinet, make sure you’ve got the space. Some people complained that part of the filter broke within the first year, but Bunn offer a very generous 3 year warranty. This shows that the majority of their products stand the test of time, or else all their machines would be sent back.

Bunn CSB3T Platinum Speed Brew

best bunn coffee maker

Key features:

  • Stainless steel hot water reservoir
  • Double wall, vacuum insulated thermal carafe
  • Unique sprayhead for optimum extraction of flavour
  • 13.9 x 8.3 x 14.9 inches
  • 9.65 pounds

The Speed Brew line are all pretty similar in how they work, but they look slightly different. They come with a unique funnel, which are specific for Bunn filters. They’re designed for a quick flow of water which prevents an overflow of coffee grounds.

A lot of people are very happy with this coffee maker and we can see why. It brews a wonderful coffee quickly, is pretty easy to clean, and the quality of the build is good. Some people say that they can taste a plastic flavour in their coffee, however, if you set the machine up following the instruction manual, and clean it out before you use it for the first time, this doesn’t happen.

The Bunn Platinum makes a very rich and flavourful carafe of coffee in 4 minutes. If you’re after a quality build and a quick cuppa, this is a great investment.

Another Bunn coffee maker that brews your coffee in super quick time, 3 minutes for a 10 cup carafe to be exact. It’s a very strong and good quality build, and so it should be for the price you pay for it. It’s slightly on the expensive end of the scale, but makes up for it in speed and durability. Some people report having their old model for 10-15 years!

Again, this Bunn has a unique spray head that optimises extraction for a flavourful brew. A lot of people like the fact that the water reservoir is stainless steel and not plastic.
