Before you decide what flavours you’re going to try, you need to know the tips and tricks on how to make a good brew. You might think it’s as simple as putting the K Cup in the compartment and voila – a cup of coffee, and it is. But, there are a few things you can do to improve and maximise all the flavours you get from your K Cup.
Clean Your Machine
I thought I’d kick off with the most laborious task. It’s annoying to do this, I know. And you might think that it doesn’t make a difference to the taste of your coffee, but it does.
If you leave your Keurig machine all dirty and full of leftover coffee grounds, well you’re asking for a bitter coffee, and that’s not a desirable taste for a lot of people. If you spend a few minutes after you’ve made your last coffee of the day cleaning it, you’re going to keep that consistent extraction.
You may not notice a difference in the taste if you clean it every day, but leave it for a week or two, and then clean it, you’ll notice all those flavours become more prominent again. Do this every day and you’ll be getting all the flavour you can out of your K Cup.
Try a Pinch Of Salt
No, I’m not pulling your leg. This is an old trick to neutralise the bitter flavours that you don’t want. Make sure you only add a little bit though, too much and it’s going to bring a strange flavour to your coffee.
If you add just the right amount, it creates a chemical reaction that breaks down that acidity and makes your coffee smoother, and less bitter.
Remove Your K Cups From The Compartment

Using K Cups has a lot of positives about them, but there are a couple of drawbacks, let’s take a look.
The most convenient way to brew a coffee is by far a K Cup. There’s nothing to it, apart from putting your capsule in the slot, and pressing a button. You get a super fast, high quality coffee, with next to no maintenance but giving it a quick clean.
Not Much Equipment
Some of these coffee makers have a lot of stuff that comes with them, especially if you get a barista style espresso machine. A K Cup coffee maker comes as one whole machine, sometimes with a removable water reservoir, so it’s incredibly straight forward.
It’s true that nothing compares to freshly ground coffee beans, and a high pressure espresso machine. However, if you’re wanting to minimise the amount of equipment you have lying around, then 100% you can have a Keurig as a great replacement for making good coffee.
I write this in the pros list while biting my tongue. The reason being there are 2 equal sided arguments. Yes, you can save money when comparing costs to buying your coffee out. Cafes are expensive, especially if you’re buying a coffee on the way to work every morning, plus having that coffee date with your friends every saturday.
However, when you compare the costs of K Cups to buying yourself a bag of coffee beans, well, you’re spending a lot more money a week than you could be for a cuppa at home. Buying coffee beans, whole or ground, is a lot cheaper than buying K Cups.
Because you’re brewing one cup at a time, you’re not going to make too much coffee, that it needs to go down the sink. It’s awful to think this happens, I know. I’m guilty of it from time to time. You’ve made a little too much in your carafe, or filled the bottom of your percolator up a little too much, and now you have excess coffee. Keurig coffee makers don’t let this happen, because you make enough for one cup at a time.
The Environmental Impact
If you’re using K Cups, you should be aware of the effect that the combined use of K Cups have on the environment. Every year, Keurig reports how many they have sold, and in 2015, it was over 10 BILLION.
You’d hope that a lot of the K Cups get recycled, but they barely ever do. For that to happen, the lid and the cup have to be separated before going in the recycling, and people don’t often do that. Most of these cups will still be sitting on this planet in 800 years. There are some biodegradable K Cups out there, which work on reducing the amount that end up in landfill, but nowhere near enough.
The best thing you could do, is go for a reusable K Cup. Not only will you reduce your effect on the environment, but you’re also going to have a much wider choice on what coffees you can drink, which brings me on to my next point.
It’s true that there are 100’s of brands that make K Cups, but it’s often only the bigger ones that do this. Most of the smaller, more local coffee roasters don’t, they stick to ground or whole beans.
This means that if a Keurig machine is your only way of brewing coffee from home, you’re going to have to pick from the brands that produce K Cups. Unless, you get a reusable K Cup, where you can then brew whatever coffee you want.

They have an interesting history as a brand. The founder being a gentleman being called Joe Martinson, ironically. Over a hundred years ago he would go down to the dock and select only the finest beans that came in. Then he would fire roast them, and take his push cart to the streets to sell coffee and chat to folks. The high quality beans, and that good customer service has been a central pillar to the Martinson brand for all those years.

All Wolfgang’s coffee beans are grown at high altitudes, slowly ripening for a full flavour. You can really taste those sweet notes long after you’ve had a sip. Although the sweet flavours are strong, the coffee isn’t as present as i’d like it to be for a medium roast. It’s difficult to get that balance of the flavouring, and yet still let the coffee remain a key note.
Apart from the coffee being on the weaker side, this is a nice brew to have on a morning to wake you up, if you’re someone who likes it sweet.
The brand itself likes to promote sustainability, taking care of the planet and its resources is hgh up in their priority. They’re Fair Trade certified as well as USDA organic.

Firstly, this coffee brand is cheap. There are a lot of brands that sell their K Cups for a pretty expensive price, and deliver mediocre coffee, not with Cameron’s Coffee. Considering the price, you get a very smooth and tasty cuppa, with no bitter aftertaste.

Another Green Mountain K Cup that brings amazing flavours to your palette. They do well at sourcing their coffee in a sustainable and organic way, and have produced this lovely light blend that’s not overly sweet and should be enjoyed at any time of the day. If you’re a fan of a dark roast, this probably isn’t the best coffee for you as it is quite light.
That being said, this flavour has all sorts of holiday season feels to it. The taste of that cinnamon, paired with the other sweet notes, makes you feel like you’ve just made it downstairs on christmas morning to see the presents Santa has left. Ideal for around christmas time, so make sure you have some in the pantry for then.
