Is The Nespresso Citiz For You? We’ll Help You Figure That Out

Exciting times getting a new coffee maker isn’t it! Having one that makes coffee exactly how you like it is the difference between starting the day right and having a slow morning.

We’ve created this Nespresso Citiz review to help you figure out if this is the right coffee maker for you. We’ve gone through it with a fine toothed comb to reveal its pros, cons and features.

Lets start of with some key points.

The Important Stuff

When looking for a coffee maker, there are some fundamental considerations to ensure you get what you’re expecting.

Value – 4.5/5

When paying a decent amount for a coffee maker, you really want to feel like you get what you pay for and you do with the Nespresso Citiz.

With the features it comes with and the quality of the coffee, there’s no feeling like you’ve been done over with the price, even if it is a little on the expensive side.

I’d say you’d have to be an espresso lover though, or at least love espresso based drinks. It comes with an Aeroccino milk frother, which opens you up to a whole other world of drinks you can make.

So yes I think it’s good value for money if espressos are your thing. If you want to brew carafes of coffee, you may be best spending your hard earned cash on something like a pour-over coffee maker.

Quality – 4.5/5

Let me first say that you’re never going to beat an authentic, barista-quality espresso with an at home, single-serve pod machine. However, the Citiz comes pretty impressively close.

When talking about single serve coffee makers at home, I don’t think you’re going to find one that’ll produce a better espresso. It creates a super rich flavour, with an almost perfect crema.

The Nespresso Evoluo which uses Centrifusion brewing technology, creates a thick foam like crema, which isn’t too authentic (but still tasty!). The Citiz produces a crema much closer to the real thing, most likely because it uses 19 bars of pressure to extract the coffee.

The machine is made out of strong, hard plastic. Don’t let this put you off. It does have a really good finish, and the build quality is up there.

Nespresso seem to have faith in their build quality as they offer a 2 year warranty, much better than Keurigs, unconfident 1 year warranty.

One thing to note is that the Nespresso Citiz is only compatible with Nespresso OriginalLine capsules, and not Nespresso VertuoLine capsules.

Size – 4.5/5

Dimensions: 14.7 x 8.6 x 10.8 inches (L x W x H)

Weight: 11.7 pounds

Size is important especially if you’re struggling for room, or if you’re thinking about storing the coffee maker in a cupboard and getting it out everytime you want to use it.

It’s a pretty compact machine, certainly a good choice if you don’t have amples of countertop space. Definitely a good idea to measure out the space to make sure it fits before purchasing.

Aesthetics – 5/5

A beautiful and elegant looking coffee maker that would go fit well in any kitchen. The chrome exterior paired with the black features give it a super modern look. The chrome also makes it look like a really high end machine, and for the price I guess it actually is.

They’ve really given all the little details some thought when designing the machine. The spout that the coffee comes out of is very unique looking. I’ve not seen that design before and I think it works well.

The logo is engraved into the machine, so no worries about it rubbing off like with some other coffee makers.

If there’s something you’d be disappointed about with the Nespresso Citiz, I highly doubt it’d be the beautiful aesthetics.

User Friendliness – 5/5

The process of making your coffee could not be easier. Start by filling up your water reservoir which is removable which makes it very convenient. Lift up the top lid, pop in your capsule and then you have a choice between two buttons, single, or double serve.

After the brewing process has finished, lift up the top lid again to dispense the used Nespresso pods into the spent capsule holder.

The fact that there aren’t lots of options makes the Citiz super easy to use. You don’t need to change the brew strength or temperature as it consistently comes out hot and flavourful anyway.

You can froth hot or cold milk too, and the way to do that is incredibly simple. Simply press the button on the Aeroccino once quickly for hot milk, or hold for a couple of seconds for cold milk. It’s a doddle.

Cleaning is really easy too with the Aeroccino and water reservoir being removable.

The only real downside to this coffee maker is how loud it can be. It’s not a problem in the middle of the day, but when it’s early in the morning and the rest of the house is still asleep, it can sound quite noisy.

Cleaning And Maintenance – 4/5

To keep the quality and freshness of your coffee high and consistent regular cleaning and maintenance is required. The easier this is to do, the more likely we’re going to do it, and the more flavourful coffee we can drink.

The things you need to clean the most are all removable, like the Aeroccino, drip tray and water reservoir. But be careful with the Nespresso milk frother as it has electrical components inside, so no dishwasher! Simply give it a hand wash after every use.

Descaling and cleaning the inner workings of the machine are as simple as filling the water up with the cleaning solution, or 50-50 water and white vinegar, and running the brew cycle a few times.

The Features

Now time for the features that make the Nespresso Citiz stand out from the crowd.

Set Custom Brew Sizes

I love this feature and I barely ever see it on coffee makers, especially espresso machines. With the two buttons to press for the different sizes, you can customise them to fit your preference.

You simply fill up the water reservoir, insert an Nespresso OriginalLine pod and place a cup under the outlet. Then, press and hold whichever button you want to custom set. When the desired volume of coffee has been brewed, let go and the Citiz will then remember how much coffee to brew when you press that button.

Super easy to do and a very nice touch.

The Aeroccino

How can we not mention this little feature. It’s a revolution for those of us that want frothed milk at home. It requires no steam wand and barely any effort, but produces fantastically frothed milk hot or cold.

With this feature you can create lattes or cappuccinos at the press (or hold) of a button. Although it’s not perfectly foamed milk like you would get with a barista-style espresso machine, it’s close enough.

For added efficiency, you can be brewing your espresso and frothing your milk at the same time. Plus you don’t have to drive to Starbucks and spend a fortune everytime you want a latte.

Here’s a video on how to use the Aeroccino if you haven’t seen one before:

Auto Shut-Off Feature

You don’t have to worry about your energy bills skyrocketing either, even if you accidentally forget to turn your coffee maker off after your morning rush.

After 9 minutes of inactivity, the Nespresso Citiz will shut itself off. There is an option to choose between 9 minutes and 30 minutes if it’s a bit too short.

Really handy for those of us that are a little forgetful!

Spent Capsule Holder

The holder that the used capsules enter once it’s finished brewing is fairly large for the size of the machine. It can hold around 11 capsules.

Firstly this is good as you don’t have to constantly be making trips to the bin to empty it every day.

Secondly, the holder is removable, making it really convenient. You don’t realise how handy it is to have the removable parts, until you get a coffee maker that doesn’t have them. It makes cleaning and maintaining much easier.

Large and Removable Water Reservoir

With a lot of home espresso machines, the water reservoirs can be quite small which means you’re always filling it up. Not with the Nespresso Citiz.

With a 34oz water reservoir, you have enough water for plenty of espressos. I wouldn’t leave water in there for too long before refilling it with fresh water, as this can affect the quality of your brew.

And of course, with it being removable means it’s really easy to rise and refill.

Who Shouldn’t Get The Nespresso Citiz

It’s probably easier to indicate why you wouldn’t be the best match for the Citiz, so if you relate to any of these statements then you should look at alternatives before deciding.

I Want To Brew Carafes

If you’d prefer to make a large pot of coffee first thing on a morning and keep sipping away, then a single serve coffee maker probably isn’t the right match for you.

The Nespresso Citiz doesn’t let you brew more than one cuppa at a time. So as an alternative, maybe you could check out the automatic pour over coffee makers that brew beautiful coffee but in larger quantities.

Many People In Our House Drink Coffee

Having a household of people that drink coffee is great. Making a brew and sipping away is something you can all do together on a morning to start the day.

However, if you get a single serve coffee maker for lots of people, firstly it’s going to take a lot of time to make 4, 5, 6 coffees in one sitting. Not only that, but the capsules are expensive. You’ll be burning through them fast, especially if each person has two or three coffees a day.

You’ll certainly better off (at least your bank account will be) getting something like a dual coffee maker which gives you both options. You’ll be able to buy a bag of coffee beans which will be cheaper and last longer.

Pros And Cons

Pros –

  • Very easy to use and maintain
  • Power saving with 9 minute auto shut-off
  • Aeroccino froths milk allowing for lattes/cappuccinos
  • Programmable buttons for custom brew size
  • Almost perfect crema
  • Removable drip tray and water reservoir (34oz)
  • Great aesthetics and design
  • Good strong build quality
  • 2 year warranty

Cons –

  • Doesn’t come with a huge range of additional features like some of the other higher end coffee makers do
  • Quite noisy
  • Power cord is thick and awkward to position out of the way (slightly nitpicky)
